The world of Pithrus.

Given below is my article published in Purattaasi issue of Poojari Murasu, a Tamil monthly circulated among temple priests of Tamilnadu.

The article focuses on the importance of the Month of Purattasi (when Sun transits Virgo) for offer of oblations to departed souls. I have written this idea in old posts on Pithru loka. Let me give a brief account of it here.

In the following diagram, the view of one side of the Milky Way galaxy is given. The centre of the galaxy is in Sagittarius while the outer edge of the galaxy is in Gemini. Our location is indicated close to Cancer.

The axis of the earth points to North and the South. The constellation of Virgo is in the southern direction. The 2 paths namely Devayana (the path of the elevated souls who are not born again) and the Pithruyana ( the path of souls / pithrus who will be reborn again) are shown in this picture.

The Pithruyana is pointing towards Virgo. In reality, Virgo is the centre for many groups of stars. To put in other words, the sequence goes like this. The earth born of the Sun moves around the Sun. The Sun born out of a core moves around that along with sister groups of stars. These sister groups move around Virgo cluster showing that they were formed from this Virgo cluster. Thus Virgo is a core from which our current existence has sprung. It is therefore relevant to think that our existence will go back to that.  When the sun comes in front of that Virgo, we think of the departed elders and offer oblations. I have written before on why and how these oblations reach them as a 3- some energy.

The link to one such article in Tamil :-

The link to some articles in English :

The rationale behind oblations done to the departed ancestors.

Do oblations reach the departed soul, if the soul has taken re-birth?

The pithu mana is about the time scale in the worlds that Pithrus reside.
It is as follows:-

Waxing phase =  Waning phase = 1 paksha = 15 thithi
2 paksha = 1 day for pithru  (equivalent to one round of Moon around the zodiac )
30 days of Pithru (60 paksha) = 1 month for Pithrus
12 Pithru month (720 paksha) = 1 year for Pithrus

This can be rewritten as follows:

1 pithru year  = (720 paksha X  15 thithi) = 10,800 thithi.
There are 360 thithi in one year if Moon’s round. (Chandra mana varusham)
Therefore 10,800 thithi / 360 thithi  = 30 years.
1 Pithru Year = 30 Chandramana years.

The Pithru day starts on the 8th lunar day (Astami) of waning moon. Their Noon occurs on the No moon day (Amavasya). Their day ends on the 8th lunar day of the Waxing moon.
The Monthly Amavasya tarpana is done at Noon time of Pithru day.

Dear Madam,

There are family traditions in Sumagali Prarthanai. I mean each family - not only Brahmins, other castes too - follow some traditional ways of thinking about their departed female ancestors. For Palakkad Brahmins and Tanjore Brahmins, I found a link which tells about how to do the Sumnaglai Prarthana.
You can scroll down the page in this link and read them.

http://www.indusladies.com/forums/chitvish-on-hindu-culture-vedanta/10133-sumangali-prarthanai-and-pondugal.html

Now on the question of daughters not cooperating to wear sarees, I have the following to say which I wrote to some one earlier.

Normally, we are supposed to pay our obesiance to
pithrus everyday as part of Pancha yajna. Our maternal
ancestors are also covered in that prayer. But as it
is, there is no prayer form exclusively for maternal
or female ancestors. I think we remember them and pray
for their blessings before starting any shubha-karyam
in our houshold. As such it is not merely to honour
them but to seek their blessings, that we conduct this
function.

But unfortunately many a time it turns out to be a
gift (of saree) to the sister (naatthanaar / sister in law) and is
seen as varumbadi (income)by them. They even 'weigh' the gifted saree and find fault with the brother and his wife for not doing upto her expectations. Many people are expressing this to be happening and are therefore do not see Sumnangali Prarathanai as a really serious issue that brings the goodwill of ancestors.

Since the deeper feelings
for the well being for the one who is doing it is not
always found, I have recommended to many who used to
complaint about it when they seek my advice on
astrology, to choose a deserving outsider who would
sincerely pray for their well being and make them the
main person in the function though others in the
family are invited to take part.

The purpose of the entire function is to invoke the
blessings of female ancestors who departed as
sumangalis (as embodiment of Lakshmi)and pray for
their guidance and good-will for the function that is
to ensue (marriage or poonul etc)

Astrologically, Sumangali Prarthana is recommended as one of the remedies if there is Pithru shapam of a female ancestor seen in the horoscope.

The Combination of Moon and Saturn in any house, or they casting their aspect on a house causing an affliction of that house, or Moon in Kemadruma yoga, or Moon as the Baadhak (For Scorpio ascendant) afflicting houses of marriage or childbirth or Saturn along with other malefics afflicting a bhava whose lord is connected with the 8th house or if Saturn joins Rahu in any of the first 6 houses of the horoscope, or if the the 9th house is afflicted by Ketu or the 9th house has an affliction having a connection to Moon or the stars of the moon (Rohini, hastham, Shravanam), then it is said that some departed female in the family is not satisfied. Some negative energy emanating from that departed female is still clinging on the family and causing obstructions.

In such cases, Sumangali Prarthana comes as a remedy. We even recommend them to do Lakshmi Puja on a Friday or Varalakshmi Puja and gift old Sumangalis with sarees and mangal items and also offer them food.

People generally think that once girls are married off they have no obligation to satisfy the parental side. It was made so, when the eldest son took charge of every affair of the house. in such a circumstance, the yearly ceremony for the departed parents was done by him and others participated. In return the eldest son enjoyed unquestionable authority and even the entire property. That is why he was considered as one one of the 5 Kuravarkal. In that situation, the sister is completely protected by the eldest brother and giving importance to the sister became part of a strategy to take care of her needs too.

Today such a status is gone. No one is depending on others. The eldest brother is no longer considered as supreme nor his wife as the Mother superior - like how Lakshmana treated Rama and Sita. However in many families today, the eldest still continues to shoulder the responsibility but not the rights. The sister-in-law is given predominance to the neglect of the daughter in law. This situation continues in many middle class families today. The gift of saree is no longer a pious occasion. The sister finds fault and the daughter in law seethes with frustration. In the melee, the spirit of offer to the departed ancestor is forgotten.

That is why I advice nowadays to look for an elderly sumangali woman who would be happy and thankful for the invitation for the ceremony and would bless the family with all her heart.

There is no vaideeka karma in this ceremony. It is more of a mental nature of having satisfied the ancestor. The feeling and ambiance is important in this.
So my suggestion is to leave off the sisters for whom sitting for the Sumangali Prarthana means wearing a saree, and instead look for old timers from the family or outside who would be more than happy with whatever is being given to them. There are umpteen number of poor Brahmin ladies from archaga families or those working in temples. Choose a deserving one and do all 'mariyaadai' to them.

Some readers may think that I am promoting Brahmins by my comments above.

I have one thing to tell them. There are many Brahmins in India and in Tamilnadu in particular who are still following the traditional ways of living and attitude as ordained to a Brahmin. The offense committed to such a Brahmin would come back to one by manifesting as an affliction of Jupiter in the horoscope of those born after the offense is done. Cancer, ovarian cyst, diabetes, peculiar cases of kidney diseases and failed marriages and no childbirth or children born with congenital problems are connected to this offense to unharming Brahims and / or stopping Brahmins from doing their duties. There is no remedy once the affliction sets in.

Dear Madam,

thanks a very good advice .,peaceful ambience/ good will is more important to ancestors and there is no point in inviting relatives if such moral values are not respected.

Dear Jayasree madam

Thank you for the long and clear reply. It is true, that the ambience and good will is very important to take the blessings of the departed ancestors. It is a new info. that if moon and saturn join, it means that a female member who departed is not happy. I am surprised because my husband's horoscope such a combination and we get lot of disturbances. we went to rameshwaram to do tila homam, and took bath in sethu also. but still problems exist. we have not gone to kasi. if i attempt to do sumangali prarthana, it does not work, somebody gets angry and sombody cries, like that it happens. But I do vaibhava lakshmi pooja on almost all fridays, and call about 40 sumangalies on varalakshmi virta day , they recite lalitha sahasranamam and i give all mangala things to all the sumangalies with prasadam, within my reach. I do it with utmost shrithai, , but still the problems persist.I do the vaibava lakshmi pooja for almostduring last 12 years. can you plese help me to identify the remedy or can u allow me to meet you in person to share some of my unique experience, if possible. i know your time is precious. i will be really happy and thank shakthi, if i can meet you. can u suggest any other remedy
Thank you

Dear Ms Mangalam Ravi,

We zero in on the issues by looking at the Karaks and the affliction to them. Moon is Mathru Karak. The affliction caused to it tells about the nature of the Dosham. As far as Sun and moon are concerned, Each one of them in conjunction with Saturn, it is interpreted as dosha arising from departed souls from father's side (for conjunction with Sun) and mother's side (for conjunction with Moon). We have to see which house is receiving the combined aspect of Saturn-Moon or Saturn-Sun as the case may be. That house in terms of the bhava (eg- if it is 10th house from lagna, then it means the profession is under affliction.)

Also check where Rahu- Ketu are, whether they afflict the house aspected by saturn-Moon. Rahu-Ketu has 3 aspects, namely 3rd,7th and 11th.

Then check if the 4th house is free of affliction. If all these are forming a net work of affliction with each other, then it means a pithru shapa is definitely there.

it can also be found out whether it is mother or some one from mother's side. It could even be servant who was badly treated by mother in a bygone generation. The pangs of suffering of that servant also could come down the line affecting the progeny.

Prominent pariharas given by rishis are
# to do gaya shradha,
# Rudra abhisheka (did you do Milk abhisheka in Rameshwaram?)
# Donation of some Dhatu connected to Saturn
# Dakshina to Brahmanas.

These are general ones that I am giving here for the sake of all readers who are interested in astrology.

For your specific problem Madam, you can give your e mail ID in this comment section. I will write to you and will keep the ID and issues confidential.

We will decide about personal meeting later. If necessary, let me see you in person
